The fly by
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro is the successor to the wildly popular DJI Mavic Pro drone released a few years ago kick-starting DJI’s entry into the foldable drone market. The Mavic 2 Pro comes along this year with a zoom variant of it, the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom.
This edition of the Mavic Pro line comes with camera improvements from the original DJI Mavic Pro, more sensors and a set of new cool smart features to take your drone photos and videos to the next level. The Mavic Pro 2 is a promising upgrade to the original DJI Mavic Pro but is it worth the upgrade?
From the eye
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro is running a 20MP 1” CMOS Sensor with an adjustable aperture from f/2.8 – f/11, 10-bit Dlog-M and 10-bit HDR video. Following DJI’s collaboration with camera maker Hasselblad, this camera comes along with Hasselblad’s new image sensor, the L1D-20c which takes advantage of Hasselblad’s Natural Colour Solution (HNCS). HNCS delivers outstanding natural colours without having to select from multiple presets. It allows photographers to achieve colours that look perceptually correct.
What took off with the Mavic 2 Pro
The Mavic 2 Pro has many great features that are worth highlighting. From its amazing camera – to the long-lasting flight time – the Mavic 2 Pro certainly packs a punch.
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro’s much-improved camera is the new drone’s leading feature. The larger sensor size and the variable aperture allows the camera to be used in more environments than ever before.
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro boasts a brand new array of sensors that help to lessen the likelihood of crashing the drone. It’s equipped with 8 cameras, 2 IR emitters and receivers, and even an extremely bright landing light to help with accuracy on low-light landings.
Half of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro’s smarts are thanks to the powerful DJI GO 4 app that is jam-packed with many smart in-built features. New with the Mavic 2 Pro is ActiveTrack 2.0, Waypoint 2.0, POI 2.0 and APAS which uses all the sensors to avoid obstacles.
The Mavic 2 Pro has a flight time of around 31 minutes which is an impressive number considering the number of extra sensors and cameras needed to keep the Mavic 2 Pro safe in flight.
What didn’t take off with the Mavic 2 Pro
Along with all great features, come a few down points. These are the price of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and the fact that users aren’t able to change cameras from the Pro camera module to the Zoom camera model.
The Mavic 2 Pro is currently $2,499 for the base model and $3,099 for the Mavic 2 Pro and the new Smart controller that DJI has released at CES this year. The price of the Mavic 2 Pro is starting to creep up into Phantom 4 territory which means the next Phantom will be more expensive or that the Mavic 2 needs to go down in price.
User can’t change cameras
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro was released alongside the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. By their names, you can tell that they have different cameras. Both cameras are swappable with one another but DJI doesn’t allow users to change them. DJI require you to send it into their repair center where you have to trade the cameras for one another at a cost.
